Fair Trade Fortnight 2006
Fair Trade Fortnight is the biggest event promoting fair trade in Australia and New Zealand, and runs from 29th April to 13th May.
Already an exciting array of events are being planned, including a speaking tour of coffee farmers from Papua New Guinea and cocoa farmers from Ghana; Connections - Strengthening ties in the fight for fair trade, a trans-Tasman student conference; tastings; public displays and exhibitions; morning teas; the launch of the first Fair Trade Community in Australia / New Zealand; schools seminars; and much more.

Producer Speaker Tour
The highlight of FTF06 will be the speaking tour of two representatives from Kuapa Kokoo, a Fairtrade cocoa producer in Ghana; and two representatives from Highlands Organic Agriculture Cooperative, a Fairtrade coffee producer in Papua New Guinea.

From Mountain Top to Counter Top: the life of the Fairtrade coffee bean
High Commissioner of PNG hosts reception for ACT café/retail industry with PNG Fairtrade coffee producers promoting Fairtrade coffee. The PNG High Commissioner will highlight the importance of trade between PNG and Australia for PNG’s economic and social development. The producers will discuss the production of the Fairtrade coffee bean and the impact of Fairtrade on their lives. A representative for Jasper Coffee (Melbourne) will discuss the company’s business with PNG Fairtrade coffee producers and the unique value/quality of Fairtrade Labelled coffee for Australian consumers. Mr. Cameron Neil of Fairtrade Labelling Australia & New Zealand will highlight the business opportunity for the ACT retail and café industry by discussing current trends in Fairtrade coffee market growth in Australia.

An African AfFAIR, A Chocolate Revolution
The Ghanaian High Commissioner will co-host with the ACT Oxfam Fair Trade Group a public reception for invited guests with two Fairtrade cocoa producers from Ghana. Following the High Commissioner’s speech, Kylie Kwong, Australia’s First Ambassador for Fair Trade & celebrity chef, will speak, as will the cocoa producers. Selected ACT restaurateurs will present to guests a pre-prepared selection of chocolate desserts and sweets prepared from Fairtrade labelled chocolate, which a panel of ACT food critics will then review. Invited guests will be offered the Fairtrade fare and Fairtrade labelled coffees.

Women Empower Women: From Cocoa Bean to Chocolate Bar
ACT’s Minister for Women, Katie Gallagher, will host a lunch reception for local ACT women and women’s organisations to highlight how women in the ACT can help empower and make a positive difference to the lives of women worldwide living in poverty - by buying Fairtrade chocolate. Two female Ghanaian cocoa producers from Kuapa Kokoo, a Fairtrade producer cooperative, will explain how Fairtrade has empowered them and had a direct impact on their lives and the lives of their children and families. Kylie Kwong, Australia’s first Ambassador for Fair Trade and female celebrity chef, will also speak, highlighting the importance of buying Fairtrade Labelled chocolate as a direct means of empowering women producers worldwide, and describing her aim to do so through her work and role as Fair Trade Ambassador.
Lunch and coffee from women-only coffee-cooperative in Peru, Café Femenino will be provided. Lucky-door prizes include: Cocolo chocolate hampers and Kylie’s latest recipe book.

HOOKED: Students for Fair Trade national conference, University of Melbourne, Parkville.
The conference will bring together an estimated 200 students from around Australia to raise awareness of the challenges faced by developing country farmers and workers in the global trading community through a number of keynote speakers, workshop sessions and events that focus on issues of inequity in the world coffee, tea and cocoa markets and the difference between "free" trade and "fair" trade. The event aims to draw industry players, developing country farmers, academics and students into a dialogue about these critical issues, and empower attendees with the knowledge that ethical consumer choices can make a positive impact on a global scale.
Connections will consist of a wide variety of activities including a diverse range of workshops, keynote addresses including two Papua New Guinean Fairtrade Coffee Farmers from the Highlands Organic Agriculture Cooperative (HOAC); the Great Fair Trade debate with presentations from national experts and hosted by a surprise celebrity chairperson; state specific networking opportunities, dramatic presentations, Funk Out for Fair Trade #2 party and much more!
It will be your opportunity to be educated, activated and empowered to advocate for fair trade whether you are new to the movement or an established campaigner. It will also provide the opportunity to explore and discuss more deeply the complexities of trade justice and the challenges surrounding the role we play as participants in a global trading community.

Watercarriers Dance Theatre presents the darker side of chocolate and afterwards we will have the rare opportunity to hear Cocoa Farmers Erica Kyere and Agnes Abrafi from Kuapa Kokoo tell their story about Fairtrade cocoa benefits farmers in Ghana.

There were over 200 events organised around the country, including presentations by farmers from Fairtrade cooperatives, workplaces and schools around the country held a Fair Cuppa morning tea and there were promotions at Trade Aid shops, local cafes, chocolate kiss stalls and film screenings. There was even a Fairtrade-themed NZ Top 40 countdown on C4!

To celebrate fair trade fortnight FTAANZ held a Fairtrade Chocolate poster competition for school students in New Zealand.
Students were asked to design a poster for Fairtrade Chocolate – ‘the best of the best’.
We received over 250 fantastic entries from all over New Zealand – so a huge thank you to all the students who took part and their teachers. We were overwhelmed by the level of understanding and creativity shown by the students – making it a very tricky task to pick the winners!

Every year in Australia and New Zealand we spend millions indulging in one of our favourite pastimes – eating chocolate! But for many cocoa farmers in the developing world, the reality of the chocolate industry is anything but sweet.
For Fair Trade Fortnight 2006, we invited two representatives from the Kuapa Kokoo cocoa cooperative in Ghana to come to Australia and New Zealand to share with consumers here the reality of life on the cocoa farm and why it is so important to them that consumers here choose Fairtrade chocolate.
Agnes Abrafi and Erica Kyere braved the winter chills (the temperature in Ghana rarely falls below 30 degrees) to talk to school and university students, mayors, chocolate producers, church congregations, journalists and campaign groups around Australia and New Zealand, armed with warm coats and a supply of Fairtrade hot chocolate.
For Agnes, who has been a cocoa farmer for 36 year, this was her first taste of chocolate. Almost all cocoa from Ghana (the world’s second largest producer of cocoa) is exported overseas for processing. The tiny amount of chocolate that is available in Ghana is far too expensive for cocoa farmers like Agnes – typically cocoa farmers earn just NZ$400 per annum according to Erica, a research and development officer for Kuapa Kokoo, who says that low income levels is the biggest problem facing cocoa farmers in Ghana. Furthermore, income from cocoa farming is limited to the harvest season and most farmers have limited alternative sources of income during the rest of the year.
In many villages in West Africa, access to clean water is limited and electricity is rare. Villagers often spend several hours a day collecting water form the nearest safe water well and waterborne diseases are rife. While basic education is now compulsory in Ghana, the basic conditions in some of the more remote villages throughout West Africa make it difficult to persuade teachers to work in some of the more remote villages and in other countries in the region, farmer’s children typically have to help with work on the farm, which means many children miss out on education. According to the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, a third of school-aged children living in cocoa producing households in the Ivory Coast have never attended school.
A few years ago, the farmers in Agnes’s village decided to join Kuapa Kokoo, a farmer’s cooperative which sells some cocoa to the Fairtrade market and Agnes talked about the significant improvements in her life and those of other farmers in her village.
Members of the Kuapa Kokoo cooperative typically earn about NZ$600 per annum – 50% more than other cocoa farmers in Ghana. Kuapa Kokoo is working with farmers to develop alternative income supplies, such as soap making and fabric printing. Through Kuapa, Agnes has received training to breed grasscutters, a West African rodent whose meat is considered a delicacy in Ghana. Agnes now has 16 grasscutters and she is able to sell them for cash to supplement her income from cocoa. Although Agnes herself only ever had access to primary level schooling, the higher income she has received from Fairtrade has meant she could afford to send her daughter to dressmaking school.
Investing in education has been a priority for the members of Kuapa Kokoo, who have used some of the revenue from Fairtrade to invest in projects such as building schools, educating farmers about fair trade and sending teachers to the more remote villages.
Kuapa Kokoo has also been installing much-needed water wells and toilet facilities in the villages.
But for Agnes, one of the important benefits has been a sense of empowerment. Traditionally in West Africa, women rarely hold positions of power, but one of Kuapa’s aims is to enhance the participation of women in decision making throughout the organisation. Agnes currently holds the elected position of Treasurer in her village society and has also been the village Recorder – probably the most powerful position within a Kuapa Kokoo village society. She has been instrumental in organising the women in her community to supplement their incomes by farming corn and cassava.
Here in Australia and New Zealand, Agnes recognised the important role that she and Erica were playing in raising public awareness about Fairtrade chocolate – audiences at every venue exceeded expectations in both size and enthusiasm and the extensive media coverage of their visit has ensured their message has reached hundreds of thousands of consumers. Agnes has gone back to Ghana inspired and determined to organise the women in her village to secure even more improvements in their lives. “I know now that together we women can do anything.”

Fair trade questions will feature in trivia rounds, with fair trade prizes to be won by participants – so brush up on your trivia knowledge! A market stall will also display and sell fairly traded goods all night.
