Mission Statement of the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ) Incorporated
The FTAANZ seeks to bring together all interested parties in Australia and New Zealand to foster and promote a common understanding of Fair Trade: ensuring a better deal for producers and workers marginalized and disadvantaged through current international trade practices and rules.
FTAANZ works with and supports the FINE definition of fair trade which is:
“Fair Trade is an alternative approach to conventional international trade. It is a trading partnership which aims at sustainable development for excluded and disadvantaged producers. It seeks to do this by providing better trading conditions, by awareness raising and by campaigning”.
Our Vision
The Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand seeks to achieve the following;
Become the peak body on fair trade in Australia and New Zealand;
Represent a wide range of stakeholders from various sectors including NGOs, traders and consumer groups;
Be skilled in public relations and other marketing activities through drawing on its staff and members’ skills;
Be a link between traders and other interested parties to producers of fair trade goods in the Asia Pacific region;
Coordinate efforts to raise awareness and promote fair trade to the extent that fair trade alternatives are widely available and understood by consumers;
Be transparent and accountable as well as value the input of all its members
Our Objectives
1. Promote the concept of fair trade and increase awareness of its importance within Australian and New Zealand communities
- To create a common understanding of fair trade within the fair trade movement in Australia and New Zealand;
- To coordinate and/or conduct research on impacts of fair trade on poverty alleviation with producer partners;
- To coordinate and/or conduct research on production, trade and consumption both within Australia and New Zealand and between developing countries and Australia/New Zealand in order to identify new market opportunities; and
- To disseminate information through media and educational programs about fair trade and its impacts/benefits.
2. Coordination of fair trade activities within Australia and New Zealand
To bring together and build a committed membership of all fair trade stakeholders;
To support the needs of FTAANZ members in promoting the concept and practice of fair trade through coordination of information and education campaigns;
To support trade members in accessing information about fair trade producers and products and in providing direct links with producers;
To ensure that consumers obtain the widest range of choice in fair trade products; and
To facilitate cooperation between FTAANZ members so that they may be able to advantage of economies of scale in trade operations.
3. Support developing country disadvantaged producers, particularly in the Asian-Pacific region, to access New Zealand and Australian markets under fair trade conditions
To assist disadvantaged producers in the Asia Pacific region to participate in fair trade networks, either through linkages between producers and buyers certified by FLO or through IFAT partnerships; and
To facilitate the development of projects and programs with producer partners aimed at providing them with the skills and tools needed to improve their own situation through economic development and fair trade.
4. To facilitate the introduction of a fair trade certification and labelling system that will provide a useful tool for Australian and New Zealand companies and consumers to identify and purchase fair trade products
