On 20 March 2007, FLO announced that from 1 June 2007 the Fairtrade Premium for coffee will increase from US 5 cents per pound to US 10 cents per pound.
The Organic Differential for coffee - which is paid in addition to the Fairtrade Premium for organic certified coffee - will also increase from US 15 cents per pound to US 20 cents per pound.
See the full FLO media release here.
These changes effectively mean that Fairtrade certified coffee is a minimum of US $1.31 a pound for non-organic certified coffee (including the US 10 cent premium and the $1.21 minimum price) and US $1.51 a pound for organic certified coffee (including the US 10 cent premium and the US 20 cent Organic Differential).
The Fairtrade standards indicate that the minimum price to be paid for Fairtrade coffee is US $1.21 a pound or the market price, whichever is higher.
Despite this recent decision on the Fairtrade Premium, the Fairtrade Minimum Price and Premium for coffee remains the subject of an ongoing review that will make its recommendations in September and October 2007.
